Herodium
In about 20 BCE, King Herod the Great built an artificial mountain, "whose appearance" Josephus wrote, "is in the shape of a breast". It is a structure that combines a strong fortress with a magnificent palace, only about 12 kilometres south of Jerusalem. Herod stored quantities of food and water here, in case he might have to flee here in an emergency, but there is evidence that he knew how to enjoy the good things in life: a bath house, a large swimming pool and other facilities. Many scholars thinks that Herod's grave is to be found in Herodium and recently new findings have strengthened this opinion. Prior to the Great Revolt the place was seized by the Zealots and 60 years later served as Bar Kochba's command post. The remains of their facilities and in particular the hideaway caves that have been hewn in the rock, can be seen in the depth of the mountain.
